Tips for making the most of your Garden Space

Many people look at the beautiful farms that have huge gardens and lots of space. They dream of going out and cutting bundles and bundles of flowers. Little do they no that this dream is very achievable even with a little space. Although the smaller the space is the harder it gets, it is still possible to have lots of flowers. In this article I will break down each space and how you should go about planting. I suggest you read through all three. They each overlap each other and give different information.

Large Farm Garden

Since this kind of property is not lacking space the key is being productive with that space. First designate the area for flowers and take measurements. Then mark how many garden beds you can fit in the space. Note that you should allow at least 1ft 1/2  wide for walking space in between beds. I suggest you creat a garden journal. I fill a journal full of measurements and different plans. You might want to play around a little.

The next step is to figure out what you want to plant. If your going for cut flowers so you can have large bundles to harvest then I suggest you grow taller longer stemmed flowers. Such as dahlias, cosmos, zinnias, sweat peas, lilies, irises, fox gloves, and tulips. If you want more of a pretty permanent garden it would be better to plant more perennials like hydrangeas, roses, and peonies. For either types you’ll want to make sure to include plenty of foliage.

One key thing that will help maximize your garden is to remember that the measurements on the seed packets are over exaggerated. They give more space then is necessary. If you want a garden full with out any gaps, learn the average size of the plant, account for it, but at the bare minimum. You are well on your way to having a beautiful garden.

Backyard Garden

This is a great way to grow all you want in your own backyard. Similar to the farm, you need to measure your area and include walking space. (About a foot and a 1/2) If you’re making a cut garden make sure your garden beds not so wide that you can’t reach the middle. The best size for a bed is 4x’-8x’ or 4x’- 10x’.

Now it’s time to plan what flowers you will use. Like I said above if your going for cut flowers I suggest you grow taller longer stemmed flowers. The closer the flowers are the more space you will have. With this start I think you should have a wonderful garden come Spring.

Condominium Garden

This one is trickier but is still possible. The best way is with pots, window boxes, and hanging baskets. If you have a type of porch you could have raised beds. Filling as much space as you can will really help growing all you can. Building trellises and shelves are great ways to fit a lot in. You could also try making a vertical garden. These unique gardens are super resourceful and really beautiful. You may not be able to have as many flowers as a farm but you can still have lots of beauty.
